Classification of Ingredient: Vitamin, Antioxidant
Naturally occuring within in the skin, vitamin E helps reduce signs of aging, softens skin, and can even increase the effectiveness of sunscreen.
What is Vitamin E?
Tocopherol refers to a group of eight different molecules known as Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant essential for healthy skin. Vitamin E is found naturally throughout the body, where it functions as a powerful free radical fighter that helps reduce inflammation. Higher levels are found in the dermis than in the epidermis.
Vitamin E is delivered to the skin through sebum but can be applied topically, especially in cases where the diet is lacking.
Vitamin E absorbs UV energy and reacts with reactive oxygen species (ROS) which protects the skin from UV-induced free radical damage and provides protection from the damaging effects of UV radiation. It is also able to provide anti-inflammatory properties within the skin. These effects are further enhanced when combined with vitamin C.
Skincare Benefits:
Vitamin E is added to beauty and skin care products, where it acts as a powerful moisturizer that helps soothing dry, irritated skin and prevents water loss. It is added to skincare for its ability to protect collagen from degradation by ROS, thereby preventing the signs of aging. It is aslo commonly added to sunscreens for its ability to increase the level of sun protection.
There are four tocopherols: alpha, beta, gamma, delta. These are the most common forms of vitamin E in skin care products. Each tocopherol has unique features that allow our skin to effectively retain moisture and protect itself against environmental pollution. Tocopherol acetate is synthetic where Tocopherol is naturally sourced.
