Ingredients:

Isopropyl Myristate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Polyglyceryl-10, Diisostearate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Water/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Saponaria Officinalis Leaf Extract, Parfum/Fragrance, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool

Ingredient Analysis:

Isopropyl Myristate is used as an emollient, thickening agent, and texture enhancer that also acts as a moisturizer and skin softener.  It is an ester of the Fatty Acid myristic acid, an ester that occurs naturally in coconut oil.  It is the product of a reaction between an alcohol and an acid, formed with a water molecule is removed.  It is considered a questionable ingredient due to its comedogenic (pore-clogging) potential. The consensus is divided with some studies showing it causes breakouts, and others finding the opposite is true.  This is also some correlation between its use and the development of perioral dermatitis. However, it is not known if it is directly caused by isopropyl myristate and not other ingredients or combinations of individual ingredients.   It is, however, generally agreed it is a weak sensitizer, and anyone with dermatitis is likely to be reactive to many cosmetic ingredients.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is an emollient, skin softening ingredient that is capable of retaining moisture and repairing the skin due to its high fatty acid content.  It also has the ability to enhance the penetration of active ingredients without leaving an oily residue on the skin. It is produced by mixing coconut oil or palm kernel oil with glycerin.

Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil is an antioxidant-rich oil produced from the outer layer of the rice during the polishing process.  It contains the antioxidants oryzanol, tocotrenol and tocopherol (Vitamin E) and squalene.  It acts as a moisturizer that helps protect the skin from sun damage and helps maintain a healthy skin tone.

Jojoba Seed Oil Simmondsia chinensis is a desert living, drought-resistant plant with an exceptionally long lifespan.  The oil derived from the seeds has high oxidative stability and is very resistant to degradation.  It is especially useful for repairing the skin barrier in people with dermatitis, eczema, and acne.  It has anti-inflammatory properties and is anti-aging. The seeds contain 40-60% oil, which is chemically classified as a liquid wax because it consists of esters, unlike other seed oils that are composed of triglycerides.  This gives jojoba seed oil unique properties for the use in skincare and cosmetics.

Glycerin is a skin-conditioning agent, skin protectant, and humectant (water binder) that occurs naturally within the skin and assists in the development of immature skin cells. Having adequate amounts of glycerin available within the skin is crucial for those who suffer from psoriasis or non-melanoma skin cancers.

Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract is known for its antioxidant-rich compounds like ferulic acid, gamma-oryzanol and phytic acid.  It is commonly used as an ingredient in skincare and for managing skin diseases.  Its bioactive compounds have been shown to exert antiaging properties.

This study showed the antioxidant activity of rice water was comparable to that of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and conclude it can be considered an antiaging ingredient for use in skincare products.

Parfum/Fragrance Added fragrance is, in my opinion, completely unnecessary at best, and very irritating to the skin at worst.

Linalool is a monoterpene alcohol that can be found in many essential oils.  It has a fragrance similar to that of bergamot oil and French lavender.  It is added to cosmetics and skincare for its fragrance properties.

Limonene is a component of the essential oil from the rind of oranges.  Its strong orange fragrance is used in skincare, cosmetics, and perfumes.  When exposed to air, it is readily oxidized to compounds that cause dermal sensitization and skin irritation. This study over a five-year period involving 6000 participants with dermatitis were patch tested with 26 different fragrance allergens. Of those, 940 had a reaction to fragrance with 30.0% of subjects reacting to the limonene component.  Its addition to skincare is purely for fragrance purposes and serves no skin-benefiting function.

pH Testing:

The formula is water-free, therefore does not have a pH value.

It removes all traces of makeup, including waterproof mascara.

Results:

I used this cleanser twice daily for about three weeks before deciding not to continue. Over this time I started to get clogged pores and some breakouts. I can’t say conclusively if it was entirely due to the ingredients in this product, but given my history with perioral dermatitis, I know the Isopropyl Myristate may be an issue, but the added fragrance and essential oils are most certainly what is causing my skin to react. I also disliked the stinging sensation from getting the product in my eyes.

Overall Impressions:

This product is effective at removing makeup and sunscreen and does an adequate job as an oil cleanser. I personally will not continue to use or repurchase, but anyone who is not sensitive to the ingredients, and wants an inexpensive oil cleanser may find this product satisfactory.
