About me

Hi I’m Kate. I am on a journey to discover the science behind why some skincare products live up to their claims, while others don’t. My reviews are based around finding safe, effective products from companies that are cruelty-free and environmentally conscious.

My interest in the ingredients and formulation of skincare began after I developed perioral dermatitis during pregnancy. I started researching the latest scientific studies to develop an understanding of what everyday habits and why certain ingredients in cosmetic formulations can contribute to a degradation in the skin barrier, and how this can lead to acne, dermatitis and a host of other skin-related problems.

After discovering how many additives in skincare are either untested or not considered safe during pregnancy or nursing, I started researching skincare ingredients. I was shocked to see how many popular and ‘natural’ skincare products contain harmful ingredients that either damage the skin barrier directly or upset the balance of good bacteria on or within the skin.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and have previously held the Laboratory Manager position at one of New Zealand’s largest food manufacturers. I have always had a strong interest in skincare and hope to be able to explain what skincare claims are evidence-based and which ones are clever marketing.

I am passionate about the emerging field of prebiotic and probiotic skincare and am excited to see how this develops over the next few years. I started this blog to share the information I have gathered along the way.

I am 38 years old and have sensitive, combination skin, that is prone to redness and dehydration.
